The history of Onitsha North LGA

Onitsha North is a Local Government Area (LGA) in Anambra State, Nigeria. It is located in the south-central part of the state, on the east bank of the Niger River. The LGA is bordered by Onitsha South LGA to the south, Idemili North LGA to the north, and Ogbaru LGA to the east. The headquarters of the LGA is Onitsha, the second-largest city in Anambra State.

16th Century

The history of Onitsha North LGA can be traced back to the 16th century, when it was founded by a group of Igbo people from Benin. The early settlers were led by a man named Eze Chima, who was a prince from Benin. The town was originally called Onitsha Mmili, which means "Onitsha on the water".

17th & 19th Century

In the 17th century, Onitsha became a major trading center in the region. The town was also a center of education and culture. In 1600, the first school in the area was established in Onitsha. In the 19th century, Onitsha became a British protectorate. The British built a trading post in the town and helped to develop the economy.

After Civil War

After the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), Onitsha North LGA became part of Anambra State. The LGA has continued to grow and develop in recent years. It is now a major economic and cultural center in the state. Onitsha North LGA is the most populous LGA in Anambra State. It is home to a number of important historical and cultural sites, including the Onitsha Main Market, the Nkpor Bridge, and the Onitsha River Port.
